The news of the day is that I will be one of scores of New Yorkers who will come together in Albany from all over the state to demand that Governor Cuomo Walk the Talk and end all fossil fuel infrastructure projects. I always loved having a birthday around Earth Day because I have been an environmental and social justice activist. But there has not been much to celebrate when it comes to the state of our planet and the danger to all the species who live on it. Nationally, this country is slipping back from even the minimal commitments made by previous administrations. In New York, where the Governor likes to proclaim himself a leader on addressing climate change. we lag far behind other states in real action to reduce carbon emissions. Some people questioned whether it was a safe idea for the students to continue on to Brooklyn Borough Hall (or, in the case of Manhattan students, Wall Street) but the reason they're out there is because they don't feel safe in their own schools. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Women's Caucus of the Green Party of the United States has endorsed the March 24 "March for Our Lives" and other student walk-outs in protest of gun violence in their schools in the wake of the horrific mass murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, in which 17 people were killed and 14 were wounded. Slayings at schools where parents trust that their children will be safe and protected appear to be on the rise. The Chicago Tribune has written that between 2000 and 2010, of the recorded 57 shooting incidents in 36 countries, 28 of them occurred in the United States. Continue reading

Jabari Brisport ran an inspiring campaign for City Council in Brooklyn, receiving 29% of the vote and demonstrating a Red-Green Alliance for Greens and socialists around the US! Nassau County - Cassandra Lems, Green Party candidate for County Executive, organized a mini-protest Sunday outside an Environmental Candidates Forum at Adelphi University. Ms. Lems and a small group of Green Party members handed out campaign literature to attendees at the forum, which was sponsored by the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund in partnership with Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Tri-State Transportation Campaign, Vision Long Island and Adelphi University. In late September and against last week, when Green Party members Jim Brown and Peter Louis called forum organizer Joshua Klainberg to ask that Cassandra Lems be included, they were told that Green Party candidates do not receive enough campaign contributions or media attention to be “viable.” Mr. Klainberg offered to allow Ms. Lems to sit in the audience, to have her presence acknowledged, and speak to attendees after the event. However, Ms. Lems declined that offer, saying she found it “patronizing and demeaning to be expected to sit and listen to ‘the real candidates’ speak.” Continue reading

 At the League of Women Voters debate* held on Sunday at Hofstra University, Cassandra Lems, Green Party Candidate for Nassau County Executive, announced her support of the New York Health Act. *A video recording of the entire candidates forum may be found here. This single payer health insurance bill, if enacted, would bring affordable and expanded health coverage to all New Yorkers, including 1.2 million currently uninsured New Yorkers. The plan would be funded through progressive payroll and self-employment taxes, coupled with a progressive assessment on income from capital gains, dividends and interest. Continue reading
