The New York Health Act (NYHA); S3425/A1466 is an active bill in the New York state legislature that could radically transform healthcare access by guaranteeing comprehensive, high quality healthcare for EVERY person living AND working in New York regardless of income, job status, or immigration status. The NYHA would create a Single Payer/Medicare for All type system in NY state, eradicating premiums, co-pays, and deductibles. A lack of healthcare coverage due to financial barriers correlates to increased risk in death and those lucky to escape death from illness, financial ruin is just around the corner with thousands of New Yorkers each year forced into personal bankruptcy, have liens placed on their homes, and are sued by hospitals for unpaid medical bills. Studies have shown repeatedly that the NYHA will save billions and over 90% of New Yorkers will pay the same or less costs for healthcare than they do now!

The popular "Healthcare as a Human Right" idea has seen the bill pass the Assembly four years in a row (2015-2018), and from 2021-2024, it had a majority of co-sponsors in both the Democratic "supermajority" Senate and Assembly. Despite this, Governor Hochul has never publicly supported the NYHA, and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins has blocked it from a floor vote in the Seante. The Green Party of New York has been a long time active supporter of the NYHA and is proud to be part of a broad coalition to pressure the New York State Senate, Assembly and Governor to finally pass this bill in the upcoming legislative session in the Spring of 2026. If New York wants to truly stand up and push back against Trump and his current administration’s healthcare budget cuts, it should move swiftly to pass the New York Health Act!
