Hydrofracking Activists Join August NY Green Party Gathering

A series of workshops, presentations and strategic planning sessions on the political steps needed to replace fossil fuels and nuclear power with reduced energy usage and alternative energy sources is attracting hydrofracking activists to a Green Party gathering in Alfred, NY, August 5th through 7th.

NY Green Fest, a bienniel festival exploring the politics of sustainability, is being held in Alfred, NY this year in conjunction with the Annual National Meeting of the Green Party US. The program features panels and workshops on a wide range of ecological, peace and justice topics.

Confirmed speakers include Richard Grossman, David Cobb, Virginia Rasmussen, Howie Hawkins, Cecile Lawrence, Tony Gronowicz, Farheen Hakeem, Ursula Rozum, John Rensenbrinck, Bill Belitskus, Jay Sweeney, Mary Jo Long, Mike Bernhard, Ken Gale, David Doonan, Jack Ossont, Kate Bartholomew, Barry Miller and Dianne Roe. Elizabeth May, the first Green elected to the Canadian parliament, David Korten, author of Agenda for a Local Economy and Tina Clarke from the transition towns movement will address the gathering by Skype. Outstanding musicians will perform throughout the weekend on our solar stage and for the evening programs: including Crow Weaver, Carl Lundgren, the Woven Green band from northern Virginia, and the Lucky Pluckers.The Bloodthirsty Vegans from Buffalo will return with their great dance music for the Saturday evening fundraiser. Fifty-two presenters are signed up and more are being added.

Registration for the weekend is $45, $20 teen/youth, children under 12 free. There is no additional charge for exhibiting. Dorm rooms, camping and the Saxon Inn are available for lodging on campus at reasonable cost. Swimming is available at the Foster Lake campground this year from 11 am to 7 pm. Local campgrounds and bed and breakfasts are also available. Meals prepared from locally-grown food will be served at the Alfred University dining hall beginning Thursday evening, August 4, 2011.
